2013 Royal Weekend Report - Mandate
Fourteen J105s hit the starting line for the start of the 2013 Royal Weekend.
The wind forecast did not look good for Saturday and was worse for Sunday. However, a light easterly arrived and with adept race committee work three races were held on Saturday and two on Sunday.
Looking up the course it was apparent that there was always more wind on the left side of the course so a leeward end start and holding on starboard tack to or close to the port tack layline and sailing back inshore on the run turned out to be the right call. Mandate won the pin end start 4 out of 5 races and were not far from that end in the other race enabling them to get left early to round the first mark in first place every race. With fewer passing lanes than usual with the favoured left side Mandate managed to hold on to their leads to end up with a perfect score.
In a good battle for second overall Full Tilt Boogie slipped by a few boats close to the finish line of the last race to claim second over Belles & Whistles. Thunderstruck beat out Starcross on a tie breaker to finish fourth. Hey Jude finished sixth overall carrying a BFD from Saturday’s third race.

2013 J/105 Fall Regatta at RCYC - Mandate
Windy, blustery conditions on Saturday were followed on Sunday by a diminishing wind, with lots of shifts which were handled deftly by the RC (well done Mike Milner and crew!) but played favourites on the race course. The challenge of making the right calls was reflected on the scoreboard, with many boats posting both very high and very low race finishes.
It was great to see Casual Elegance come out to play, and to play host to Endeavour and Voodoo Magic from Mimico, to help make sixteen boats on the line.
Mandate won the regatta with another outstanding set of results, proving like father like son, with the younger McLaughlin handily posting single digits in all his races.
Congratulations to the Tusk crew for second place and their best-ever J105 regatta result!
Live Edge squeaked into third place, in the process getting a bullet to break Mandate’s perfect score.
In an extremely tight grouping, Jamaica Me Crazy and Thunderstruck took fourth and fifth place, both within one point of third. And just a few points farther back were Endeavour, The Usual Suspects and Hey Jude, all within one point of each other.
After Saturday’s racing in the rain, the skies cleared for an outstanding BBQ, with great food, music and entertainment (including Bocce and the brilliant Crime Scene puzzle to solve). Thanks to Doug Bullock for organizing a great event, Vicky Hall who looked after the food, Libby Bullock who set up the Crime Scene, and our great chefs Peter Hall and Terry Michaelson.
Be sure to check-out the regatta album. There are great shots of crews and boats, including close-up action photos.

2013 RCYC Open - Re:Tern
Saturday’s racing was a test of patience. Calm and showers in the morning developed into light airs and heavier showers in the afternoon. One race was attempted, but on the third leg a big windshift, low visibility in rainshowers and a creatively placed mark change turned the race into a big game of “find the windward mark”. Some boats were more successful at this game than others, leading to requests for redress, only to find that the race had been abandoned by the RC before the finish.

2013 LYRA at NYC (Course Races) - Mandate
Mandate wins the LYRA weekend at NYC.
Friday to Sunday, Mandate, Hey Jude, had the better of the fleet with Jamaica Me Crazy, The Usual Suspects and Live Edge as the next cluster in a great weekend for racing. Varied conditions all three days, testing all measure of tactics and boat handling. The Usual Suspects winners the last time LYRA was raced in the Toronto area, could not keep up with Mandate and Hey Jude each with top 5 finishes in all races (save one for #83 with a rare 6th).
2013 is remarkable in the great improvement of all finishers, with great compression of the fleet, with seconds, not minutes generally separating the first rung from the last at each of the 5 regattas raced thus far.

The Fleet Executive has decided to CANCEL the J105 Dinner on Saturday November 23 2013.
Unfortunately, the number of regrets we received, combined with the limited number of individuals who signed up did not give us sufficient numbers of dinners required by the Club to guarantee the rooms we had booked.
We will plan a PARTY for the J105 Fleet in the New Year.
