2010 YYC Levels RegattaJ105 Fleet 4 2010 Youngstown Levels - July 24-25th, 2010

The Unsual Suspects - 3rd at 2010 Youngstown LevelsHow was this year's Youngstown regatta you ask? We'll let the two skippers which battled out to the last race, no, the last leg tell everyone just ahead. First, I can tell you this much:  Saturday's 14-17knots at 260 degrees for 1.2NM were fair and square for everyone. The relatively steady wind direction, some current as always here, and the famous Niagara scarpment induced wind lanes made for thoroughly challenging conditions. The RC started 4 races, yes four, with the last ending by 2:38PM.  Planet B went back to the club with bragging rights, with a starting and ending bullet for the day whilst Jamaica Me Crazy replied with 2 bullets for race 2 and 3.  The fleet behaved, all weekend with only one over early by two boats on Sunday and relatively stress free starts both days. The stiffling heat and humidity was not a factor during the days races, but may have played havoc on those staying on board or on near by tents. It rained buckets both nights.

Sunday's start, also on time, was at the top range of wind for the day clocking at upwards of 14NM, but as the clouds left the race course, so did the wind, by then we had raced 6 thoroughly enjoyable races, so the single drifter race (a shortened course!) was just a reminder for all of us who have raced at Youngstown at the end of July, that there's always at least one weird wind race! Today again, the RC chose 1.2NM and the direction started at 306, with a change of course after the first start. Winds (or currents!) were a huge factor, and disturbed air from other fleet's caused lanes to appear and dissappear. And now over to the skippers....

"Thank you for the kind words Robert. I too agree it was the best organized racing I have done in years.

It was J105 North American quality!!  The RC multi-tasked: starting our class while others were finishing, making a change of course for one fleet for while the other fleets were still rounding the old course, kept a tight start line. And the PRO had a great sense of humor and kept the fleets informed.  Peter Hall"

Extended News
We had 7 great races with extremely tight racing.... in fact the top 2 boats were both tied after Saturday with 2 firsts and 2 seconds...   PLANET B and JAMAICA ME KRAZY ...
The 4 other boats were duking it out with tight racing and great fun.
We were fortunate to get HANK STUART from Rochester who is an well known and Excellent PRO and he managed the course so well with great lines and 4 races on Saturday 3 on Sunday.
Winds were great.
The Regatta win was not determine until the last leg of the 7th race where the lead for the overall win changed hands several times.... with Peter Hall on JAMAICA getting the top spot, PLANET B in 2nd and THE USUAL SUSPECTS showing great form with a  win on the 7th race for 3RD overall.

VOODOO MAGI, TUSK and SCOTCH ROCKS all showed great form at times and improved throughout the 7 races,

It is dissappointing that our very active fleet with some many great boats could only muster 6 out of a possible 17-20 for what turned out the BEST RACING OF THIS YEAR..

Do not let this happen to the Canadians... we all agreed to go to CORK and we will have another great regatta away from all the business pressures and be ready for fun times.  They start with the delivery race to Kingston and I will be forwarding the SI"s shortly in the next few days for discussion.

Congrats to Peter Hall and Crew  ... and thanks to all the PLANET B guys who did so well and came so close.
