2010 Youngstown Level Regatta

How was this year's Youngstown regatta you ask? We'll let the two skippers which battled out to the last race, no, the last leg tell everyone just ahead. First, I can tell you this much: Saturday's 14-17knots at 260 degrees for 1.2NM were fair and square for everyone. The relatively steady wind direction, some current as always here, and the famous Niagara scarpment induced wind lanes made for thoroughly challenging conditions. The RC started 4 races, yes four, with the last ending by 2:38PM. Planet B went back to the club with bragging rights, with a starting and ending bullet for the day whilst Jamaica Me Crazy replied with 2 bullets for race 2 and 3. The fleet behaved, all weekend with only one over early by two boats on Sunday and relatively stress free starts both days. The stiffling heat and humidity was not a factor during the days races, but may have played havoc on those staying on board or on near by tents. It rained buckets both nights.
Sunday's start, also on time, was at the top range of wind for the day clocking at upwards of 14NM, but as the clouds left the race course, so did the wind, by then we had raced 6 thoroughly enjoyable races, so the single drifter race (a shortened course!) was just a reminder for all of us who have raced at Youngstown at the end of July, that there's always at least one weird wind race! Today again, the RC chose 1.2NM and the direction started at 306, with a change of course after the first start. Winds (or currents!) were a huge factor, and disturbed air from other fleet's caused lanes to appear and dissappear. And now over to the skippers....
"Thank you for the kind words Robert. I too agree it was the best organized racing I have done in years.
It was J105 North American quality!! The RC multi-tasked: starting our class while others were finishing, making a change of course for one fleet for while the other fleets were still rounding the old course, kept a tight start line. And the PRO had a great sense of humor and kept the fleets informed. Peter Hall"
We had 7 great races, with extremely tight racing.... in fact the top 2 boats were tied after Saturday with first and 2 seconds. .." Read More

2010 Founders Regatta

The overall standings change little as the fleet is out in force again this weekend.
In the midst of Toronto's G20 mayhem, 12 participants braved the elements, police and coast guard Toronto Harbour overzelous patrolling. The regatta was punctuated by unusual wind shifts, hazy, variable wind, and only one race on Saturday due to poor wind. A total of 4 races were started. Planet B's two first place finishes, was marred by a black flag DSQ, which also affected Hey Jude on Sunday's second race. The absence of the two season's leaders, for that race was not wasted by Jamaica Me Crazy and Full Tilt Boogie. Remarkable this weekend was the srong showing of all competitors, new and old to the fleet.
This year's Founders edition also featured the hospitality of Vicky Hall, Peter Hall and crew of the Jamaica Me Crazy, which hosted an informal get together, well attended and exquisitely catered by Vicky and members of her crew. Once again the bar has been set high for the next social event organizers! Check out the photo album link for some pics of the event. Thank you guys, it was terrfic!

2010 RCYC Open

Planet B, Hey Jude and Jamaica Me Crazy all finished first at each of the three races held Sunday. Overall standings still provide sufficient room for consistent participants to move up in the standings. The host club, RCYC, provided excellent Race Comittee work which was greatly appreciated by all racers and was discussed in the post race briefing. Thank you guys! |

2009 Pre-Canadians Regatta

Re:Tern wins the 2009 J105 Pre-Canadians or Fall Regatta. Another wonderful day in the neighbourhood. With winds somewhat more settled than Saturdays constantly oscillating shifts that played havoc to many a tactician, Sunday we experienced wind speeds ranging from 4 to 12.5 Kts. The fleet, behaved well today again. Mike Milner and the rC calling only one boat over early and did not use the black flag more than once in six races for the 12 participating boats this weekend. Races were 0.8 or slightly longer and the 6th raced featured a upwind finish.
The morning de-brief by Chris Cook was not only educational but was presaged the strategy for Sunday's racing. The best racers this weekend, Re:Tern who embraced the "climbing of the ladder" approach of gaining advantage at the three distinct phases of the race. They showed disciplined starts, good assessment of the mid course conditions, and gradually moveded to the favoured side of the course.
Planet B, second overall for this regatta, did not fare as well, caught on the wrong side, and unable to rapidly change sides hurt them. They had 2 bullets. The Usual Suspects had another great regatta, coming in third for the weekend. Hey Jude's DSQ on the black flag, was the difference in their result, and shared bulltets with Re:Tern, Live Edge, and Tusk, the latter two with their first 1st place finish for the season.
The 2009 J105 Canadians, will be the final show down between Hey Jude and Planet B, as only two points separates these two boats for the 2009 Fleet 4 Championship.

Royal Weekend

![]() |
Hey Jude wins the Royal Weekend Regatta and the J105 Royal Week North Sails Plaque. With 2 bullets, Jim Rathbun and crew overcame on all takers over the three race regatta. Saturday's two race event, a traditional windward leeward, was marked by slow wind conditions which made the Race Committee postpone the start until the wind settled. Once it did the fleet raced two 1.3 NM races in 8 to 12 knot winds. Confusion over a change of course, not documented in the Sailing Instructions, marred the first race won by Full Tilt Boogie, followed by Thunderstruck and Jamaica Me Crazy. The second race was won by Hey Jude. Saturday's afternoon wind conditions were highly influenced by the remnants of Hurricane Bill. |
| Sunday's only race was delayed, until the gradient winds built to a steady 8 to 15 kts from the North West. The pursuit style race, was interesting, but presented problems to our fleet with close encounters around the marks with boats of other fleets not respectful of the three boat length circle or our ability to nimbly round the marks. Hey Jude won with a comfortable ten boat lead over Planet B. | |
