2010 Youngstown Level Regatta

2010 Season2010 YYC Levels RegattaJ105 Fleet 4 2010 Youngstown Levels - July 24-25th, 2010

How was this year's Youngstown regatta you ask? We'll let the two skippers which battled out to the last race, no, the last leg tell everyone just ahead. First, I can tell you this much:  Saturday's 14-17knots at 260 degrees for 1.2NM were fair and square for everyone. The relatively steady wind direction, some current as always here, and the famous Niagara scarpment induced wind lanes made for thoroughly challenging conditions. The RC started 4 races, yes four, with the last ending by 2:38PM.  Planet B went back to the club with bragging rights, with a starting and ending bullet for the day whilst Jamaica Me Crazy replied with 2 bullets for race 2 and 3.  The fleet behaved, all weekend with only one over early by two boats on Sunday and relatively stress free starts both days. The stiffling heat and humidity was not a factor during the days races, but may have played havoc on those staying on board or on near by tents. It rained buckets both nights.

Sunday's start, also on time, was at the top range of wind for the day clocking at upwards of 14NM, but as the clouds left the race course, so did the wind, by then we had raced 6 thoroughly enjoyable races, so the single drifter race (a shortened course!) was just a reminder for all of us who have raced at Youngstown at the end of July, that there's always at least one weird wind race! Today again, the RC chose 1.2NM and the direction started at 306, with a change of course after the first start. Winds (or currents!) were a huge factor, and disturbed air from other fleet's caused lanes to appear and dissappear. And now over to the skippers....

"Thank you for the kind words Robert. I too agree it was the best organized racing I have done in years.

It was J105 North American quality!!  The RC multi-tasked: starting our class while others were finishing, making a change of course for one fleet for while the other fleets were still rounding the old course, kept a tight start line. And the PRO had a great sense of humor and kept the fleets informed.  Peter Hall"

2010 Season

2009 PCYC-Open - J105 Fleet 4 Lake Ontario
2010 PCYC Open Regatta - July 10-11th, 2010
A great turn-out is expected for the ever popular Port Credit Yacht Club Open Regatta.  Last year's proved an exciting race, punctuated by strong winds, which caused the late start on Saturday.

PCYC's 2010 regatta, was somewhat dissappointing for the fleet, and racing on the second day was frustrating again as we had trouble with shifting wind conditions, and lack of wind, which delayed the start by one hour.  Only four races were held for the weekend, which belonged to Re:Tern followed closely by Jamaica Me Crazy.  Hey Jude, maintains her overall lead, putting further distance against Jamaica Me Crazy and Planet B the closest competition in the standings.

2010 Founders Regatta

2010 Season2010 RCYC Founders Regatta Sonic BoomThe Founders Regatta's is Jamaica Me Crazy's first for the year! JMC's strong showing brings her first season's regatta, overtaking the early leaders Hey Jude and Planet B.  Full Tilt Boogie is second for the weekend, Planet B is third.

The overall standings change little as the fleet is out in force again this weekend.

In the midst of Toronto's G20 mayhem,  12 participants braved the elements, police and coast guard Toronto Harbour overzelous patrolling.  The regatta was punctuated by unusual wind shifts, hazy, variable wind, and only one race on Saturday due to poor wind. A total of 4 races were started.  Planet B's two first place finishes, was marred by a black flag DSQ, which also affected Hey Jude on Sunday's second race.  The absence of the two season's leaders, for that race was not wasted by Jamaica Me Crazy and Full Tilt Boogie.  Remarkable this weekend was the srong showing of all competitors, new and old to the fleet.

This year's Founders edition also featured the hospitality of Vicky Hall, Peter Hall and crew of the Jamaica Me Crazy, which hosted an informal get together, well attended and exquisitely catered by Vicky and members of her crew.  Once again the bar has been set high for the next social event organizers! Check out the photo album link for some pics of the event. Thank you guys, it was terrfic!

Hey Jude and Planet B battle it out, again!

2010 RCYC-Open - J105 Fleet 4 Lake Ontario
Following the great turn-out at ABYC, the fleet was out in force again, including RedPortLeft our Pittsburgh, PA based fleet member. With three races on Saturday, with winds topping 17-18 knots, driving rain and large waves, in conditions which taxed even the most experienced crews.

Planet B, Hey Jude and Jamaica Me Crazy all finished first at each of the three races held Sunday.  Overall standings still provide sufficient room for consistent participants to move up in the standings.

The host club, RCYC, provided excellent Race Comittee work which was greatly appreciated by all racers and was discussed in the post race briefing. Thank you guys!

Come on down to Rhode Island for some great racing this July/August!

Many of you have heard about the progress we are making on the J-105 Tour idea…the mid-summer portion, the Narragansett Bay Championship, is now posted on the National website, but here’s a heads-up with more details:

J105 North American Championships

2009 Season2009 J105 North American Championship - American Yacht Club, Rye. N.Y
2009 J105 North American Championship 2nd Place HeyJude, RCYC

Hey Jude finishes 2nd Overall for the 2009 J105 North American Championship!
Championship Day 4.
Jim Rathbun and crew achieve the fleet's best away result for the fleet and culminates a flawless 2009 campaign.  Congratulations Jim. Sonic Boom was 15th and Live Edge was 16th. The excellent result reflects well on the quality of sailing of the J105 fleet in Lake Ontario, and the tenacity and consistency of the Hey Jude crew which has beem demonstrated with skill at the highest levels at every major away regatta they have participated in the last ten years.

After San Fransisco's Power Play, and runner-up is James Rathbun on Hey Jude third place went to Kincsem team of Joerg Esdorn and Duncan Hennes.

Two races were completed on the final day of the championship. Jeremy Henderson and Harald Edegran on Conundrum ended the regatta on a perfect note, winning both contests. Kincsem followed Conundrum in Race 10, then Kenneth Colburn on Ghost. In the concluding race, Damian Emery on Eclipse came in second, trailed by Hey Jude.

Competitors benefited from four days of solid breeze on Long Island Sound. The top three boats are: Bruce Stone, Power Play (55 points), James Rathbun, Hey Jude (64), Joerg Esdorn/Duncan Hennes, Kincsem (73).

Check out Bernie's Photo Gallery with shots of Sonic Boom Crew and on the water action.

Championship Day 3. . Live Edge overtakes Sonic Boom on Day 3 and improves her standing to 16th overall 2 points ahead.  Hey Jude drops to fourth place. 11 points behind today's new leader Power Play and 5 points behind Kincsem.  With stronger winds reported today, expect the top three boats to be racing defensively tomorow.

Championship Day 2. A Tougher day for Jim Rathbun today, but the RCYC boat moved down one place to second overall with two days of racing left.  RCYC other two boats Sonic Boom and Live Edge were mid-fleet. Competion is intense with all the favourites, except for Kincsem having at least one tough race.  Temperatures remained mild at 14 C and winds ranged between 10 and 14 kts.  Check out on the course photography, of all three Canadian boats, here

Hey Jude at the 2009 J105 North American ChampionshipChampionship Day 1. Jim Rathbun and Hey Jude lead the NA's with three top 5 finishes, including a bullet after three races of the championship. As one of favourites to win the event, they will have tough going against the strong local contingent, many who know well the strenght of the Canadian crews.

Sonic Boom, and Live Edge are top 20 although still early days we expect . Expect great racing from the experienced Rathbun and crew. We all cheering for you Jim.

2009 Pre-Canadians Regatta

2009 Season

2009 Pre-Canadians Regatta
Re:Tern wins the 2009 J105 Pre-Canadians or Fall Regatta. Another wonderful day in the neighbourhood.  With winds somewhat more settled than Saturdays constantly oscillating shifts that played havoc to many a tactician, Sunday we experienced wind speeds ranging from 4 to 12.5 Kts.  The fleet, behaved well today again. Mike Milner and the rC calling only one boat over early and did not use the black flag more than once in six races for the 12 participating boats this weekend.  Races were 0.8 or slightly longer and the 6th raced featured a upwind finish.

The morning de-brief by Chris Cook was not only educational but was presaged the strategy for Sunday's racing.  The best racers this weekend, Re:Tern who embraced the "climbing of the ladder" approach of gaining advantage at the three distinct phases of the race. They showed disciplined starts, good assessment of the mid course conditions, and gradually moveded to the favoured side of the course.

Planet B, second overall for this regatta, did not fare as well, caught on the wrong side, and unable to rapidly change sides hurt them. They had 2 bullets. The Usual Suspects had another great regatta, coming in third for the weekend.  Hey Jude's DSQ on the black flag, was the difference in their result, and shared bulltets with Re:Tern, Live Edge, and Tusk, the latter two with their first 1st place finish for the season.

The 2009 J105 Canadians, will be the final show down between Hey Jude and Planet B, as only two points separates these two boats for the 2009 Fleet 4 Championship.

articles: 2009CNDS-HEYJUDE.JPGHey Jude stages a comeback to win the 2009 J105 Championship.

Jim Rathbun on Hey Jude staged a comeback to win the J/105 Canadian Championship over the weekend. The team scored 41 points over 9 races. Glen Malcolm and Arthur English, racing Starcross, came in runner-up with 43 points, followed by Dave Shaver on Re:Tern (45 points). 18 boats competed at this year's event.  Hey Jude, already registered to the 2009 North American Championship is well poised to do well at Rye.  Jim and three other Fleet 4 boats have already registered.

Jim Rathbun will also be crowned as this year's Fleet 4 champion, over Stuart Kilpatrick/Robert Baker's Planet B and Peter Hall's Jamaica Me Crazy.

Royal Weekend

2009 Season

news: 2009-RWR-RCYC.jpgHey Jude wins the Royal Weekend Regatta and the J105 Royal Week North Sails Plaque.  With 2 bullets, Jim Rathbun and crew overcame on all takers over the three race regatta.  Saturday's two race event, a traditional windward leeward, was marked by slow wind conditions which made the Race Committee postpone the start until the wind settled.  Once it did the fleet raced two 1.3 NM races in 8 to 12 knot winds.

Confusion over a change of course, not documented in the Sailing Instructions, marred the first race won by Full Tilt Boogie, followed by Thunderstruck and Jamaica Me Crazy.  The second race was won by Hey Jude.   Saturday's afternoon wind conditions were highly influenced by the remnants of Hurricane Bill.
Sunday's only race was delayed, until the gradient winds built to a steady 8 to 15 kts from the North West.  The pursuit style race, was interesting, but presented problems to our fleet with close encounters around the marks with boats of other fleets not respectful of the three boat length circle or our ability to nimbly round the marks.  Hey Jude won with a comfortable ten boat lead over Planet B.
