RedPortLeft wins distance race line honors and PHRF 1 at CORK

RedPortLeft was not only the best US boat based at the 2010 J105 Canadians, they were also awarded distance race line honors and PHRF 1 trophies for their feats, bringing their boat from their home port, Buffalo. NY.

Pittsburg based, Marty and Bill McKenna received honours while double handling their J105 in long distance racing against full crews! The kicker is that RedPortLeft does not have a working autohelm, so all Marty basically steered all they way while Bill McKenna trimmed, doused, set, navigated, hiked and called tactics in the race in winds around 22 knots.

RedPortLeft had the boat up 12 knots of speed going through very narrow channels at times on the other side of Simcoe Island. Not only thrills and chills, but a boatride of a lifetime for this pair of brothers. Well done guys!
2010 j105 Canadian Championship - News

Jamaica Me Crazy, maintains her 2010 outstanding season with her first J105 Canadians Championship, and a very convincing win, finishing 3rd or better in 8 of 9 total races scored! Re:Tern was second and Planet B was third. Both finished with at least two bullets, one less than Hey Jude.

A fabulous time was had by all in Kingston. All the rumours about strong wind and great sailing conditions are true. It was an excellent regatta.

At 10 am when we were tuning up the winds were 8 - 10 knots

At 11 - 12 during the first race they were 10 - 12 knots

At 12:30 - 1:30 they were 12 - 14 knots

At 2:00 - 3:00 they were 15 -18 knots

At 3:30 - 4:30 they were 19 - 22 knots

Followed the same pattern every day. Great sailing with lots of awesome moments

Summer J105 Regatta RCYC Aug 7&8

Summer J105 Regatta RCYC Aug 7&8

The RCYC Summer regatta is typical of mid-season racing, however 2010 will be remembered as a great racing season in as far as weekend wind conditions, (alas, the same cannot be said for midweek racing) As we approach the final weeks and the J105 Canadians, racing crews perform at a higher standard. We remarked crisper execution, heroic racing (three on board on Sonic Boom on Saturday) and much closer competition in and around all the marks. Ah, how more enjoyable can racing be after another glorious weekend. What pleasure it was to have Esperanza and thoroughly business like Race Committee work, Thanks Mike Milner!

After 6 races the top three boats, JMC, HEY JUDE and PB were all tied at 17 points. Let this be a reminder to all that each race counts, and we are racing all the time! The 7th and deciding race saw the top three 3 boats exchange places several times during the last three legs with the final result propelling, Jamaica Me Crazy to the top spot with 18 Hey Jude 19 and Planet B with 20.

Both Saturday and Sunday were marvelous, regardless of the odd rain drops With winds strong and consistently in the upper range of teens on both days, differing Sunday as there was less wild oscillations, with directional swings that caused havoc specially in the first race.

Remarkable were also the contributions of both Forro and Voodo Magic. George Mezo and family generously provided the fleet with a plethora of foods and beverages which demonstrated once again the strength of our fleet is not only exciting racing but in the culinary and social arts. Be sure you visit valiant Iza Hansen (Bjug’s main trimmer's wife) who stuck it out on the RC boat on Saturday. She took some incredible shots of the weekend's action. There are great shots of all the participants, and some really good shots of the starts and some close roundings. Please visit her remarkable gallery

2010 J105 Canadians - Feeder Race to Kingston2

First, let me apologize for missing the Brew Pub event. After a bumpy night ride PLANET B finished at 1:24PM on Saturday and I was sick and had a splitting headache. We arrived at Olympic Harbour and discovered that we were 1 of only 2 boats (JMC the other) who had booked in there. We had our support trailer located in the lot and needed to be there to offload our gear. We cleaned up the boat and we ready to leave around 3:30PM, The crew were bagged and the prospect of waiting another 4 plus hours to the party was not enticing. They wanted to go home.

So I handed off my form to Peter Hall, and off we went where I got a much needed 12 hours sleep and feel human again.

PLANET B finished in 25 hours and 56 minutes 10 sec which included 32 minutes of motoring time. We engaged our engine when the wind fell to 5-6 knots in lumpy seas at Lakeport (east o Cobourg) and we felt the move up to a possible fresher breeze and the reach to Petre Point was a better location to be. We found wind 32 minutes later and sailed the rest of the way into the finish.

I would be interested to know what everyone else discovered on their delivery and if there is a compiled list it would be great to get a copy of it.

See you all on Thursday,

Regards

A great turn-out is expected for the ever popular Port Credit Yacht Club Open Regatta. Last year's proved an exciting race, punctuated by strong winds, which caused the late start on Saturday.

PCYC's 2010 regatta, was somewhat dissappointing for the fleet, and racing on the second day was frustrating again as we had trouble with shifting wind conditions, and lack of wind, which delayed the start by one hour. Only four races were held for the weekend, which at the end was won by Re:Tern followed closely by Jamaica Me Crazy. Hey Jude, maintains her overall lead, putting further distance against Jamaica Me Crazy and Planet B the closest competition in the standings.

2010 Youngstown Level Regatta

2010 Youngstown Levels - July 24-25th, 2010

How was this year's Youngstown regatta you ask? We'll let the two skippers which battled out to the last race, no, the last leg tell everyone just ahead. First, I can tell you this much: Saturday's 14-17knots at 260 degrees for 1.2NM were fair and square for everyone. The relatively steady wind direction, some current as always here, and the famous Niagara scarpment induced wind lanes made for thoroughly challenging conditions. The RC started 4 races, yes four, with the last ending by 2:38PM. Planet B went back to the club with bragging rights, with a starting and ending bullet for the day whilst Jamaica Me Crazy replied with 2 bullets for race 2 and 3. The fleet behaved, all weekend with only one over early by two boats on Sunday and relatively stress free starts both days. The stiffling heat and humidity was not a factor during the days races, but may have played havoc on those staying on board or on near by tents. It rained buckets both nights.

Sunday's start, also on time, was at the top range of wind for the day clocking at upwards of 14NM, but as the clouds left the race course, so did the wind, by then we had raced 6 thoroughly enjoyable races, so the single drifter race (a shortened course!) was just a reminder for all of us who have raced at Youngstown at the end of July, that there's always at least one weird wind race! Today again, the RC chose 1.2NM and the direction started at 306, with a change of course after the first start. Winds (or currents!) were a huge factor, and disturbed air from other fleet's caused lanes to appear and dissappear. And now over to the skippers....

"Thank you for the kind words Robert. I too agree it was the best organized racing I have done in years.

It was J105 North American quality!! The RC multi-tasked: starting our class while others were finishing, making a change of course for one fleet for while the other fleets were still rounding the old course, kept a tight start line. And the PRO had a great sense of humor and kept the fleets informed. Peter Hall"
JMC's strong showing brings her first season's regatta, overtaking the early leaders Hey Jude and Planet B. Full Tilt Boogie is second for the weekend, Planet B is third.

The overall standings change little as the fleet is out in force again this weekend.

In the midst of Toronto's G20 mayhem, 12 participants braved the elements, police and coast guard Toronto Harbour overzelous patrolling. The regatta was punctuated by unusual wind shifts, hazy, variable wind, and only one race on Saturday due to poor wind. A total of 4 races were started. Planet B's two first place finishes, was marred by a black flag DSQ, which also affected Hey Jude on Sunday's second race. The absence of the two season's leaders, for that race was not wasted by Jamaica Me Crazy and Full Tilt Boogie. Remarkable this weekend was the srong showing of all competitors, new and old to the fleet.

This year's Founders edition also featured the hospitality of Vicky Hall, Peter Hall and crew of the Jamaica Me Crazy, which hosted an informal get together, well attended and exquisitely catered by Vicky and members of her crew. Once again the bar has been set high for the next social event organizers!
